Lac Saint-Louis Coast Watch was launched in 2021 to improve the efficiency of lake search and rescue operations. The project is a way to incorporate the assistance of people located on the shores of Lake Saint Louis as lake observers in times of emergencies that occur on the lake. It is an initiative of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Unit 8. Unit 8 is based at the Baie D' Urfe Yacht Club.
Modeled similar to the National Coast Watch Institute in the United Kingdom, Coastwatchers are volunteers who are living on or near the waterfront of Lake St Louis.
Once shoreline dwellers have completed a brief online coaching session they are then capable of acting as a set of eyes and ears to provide assistance to Unit 8. They would observe their part of the waterway and would either be able to:
Identify a person or vessel in distress and report it to the appropriate authorities, and/or
Receive digital alerts from Unit 8 if a search and rescue operation could benefit from the observation of the lake from the shoreline along their property.
In 2021, we will be starting a pilot program to gauge uptake from local citizens located on the shoreline from Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue to Pointe-Claire.
As an all-volunteer organization, no member receives any financial compensation whatsoever for their work. However, the organization is responsible for covering all costs associated with maintaining the volunteer network, upkeep of communication technology, and awareness campaigns.
To support our efforts you can make a donation now. All contributions, small or large, are needed and appreciated to help us maintain this life-saving service on Lake St. Louis.
Thank you in advance for helping to make sure we can be there when needed!
